In the past nine months, approximately twelve UT Police personnel in Chandigarh have encountered legal issues. The agencies tasked with apprehending or taking appropriate measures against these individuals encompass CBI, Haryana Police, and UT Police themselves.
Sub-Inspector Naveen Phogat has been respectfully relieved of duty. Furthermore, in recent times, three out of the twelve officers were apprehended. It is alleged that two of them were caught accepting a bribe of Rs 2.50 lakh, while another was arrested for the act of supplying narcotics to an inmate at Model Burail jail.
The officers who have been suspended include six constables, one senior constable, three sub-inspectors, and two head constables. Moreover, they are facing allegations not only of corruption but also of extortion, liquor smuggling, and criminal intimidation.
The CBI took ASI Randeep Singh and head constable Ravinder Singh Rana into custody on March 22, as they were suspected of accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000. According to a source, there are three other officers who are currently evading arrest, including dismissed SI Naveen Phogat from Chandigarh Police, and two officers - S-I Surinder Fauji and Constable Pawan - who are wanted by the CBI. Despite being an independent agency, we have cooperated fully with the CBI by providing them with all the necessary details regarding the two officers.
Despite the presence of strict instructions, written circulars, and warnings against engaging in any illegal activities, these repeated incidents continue to occur. Even Sub-Inspector (SI) Naveen Phogat, who was involved in a Rs 1.01 crore extortion case, has been dismissed from the police department. Additionally, we have been actively encouraging individuals to report any instances of officers demanding bribes. Furthermore, we have implemented a quarterly performance review for officers. Those found to be involved in such acts are being transferred to the police lines, Sector 26, as a consequence. This information was shared by an anonymous DSP rank officer.
When contacted, SSP (UT) Kanwardeep Kaur politely mentioned that strict action is being taken against police personnel whose involvement in any illegal activity is confirmed. Officers involved in corruption or any other illegal activities have either been suspended or dismissed.
While the majority of cases were registered by the CBI and other state police forces, we also have our Police Complaint Cell (PCC), which is comparable to the Internal Vigilance Cell (IVC). We conscientiously address grievances against police personnel found engaged in unlawful activities.
