'Fish Curry Rice' is mandatory to serve at beach shacks: Goa Govt

Goa, known for its scenic shorelines and diverse culinary offerings, is taking a bold step to promote its rich regional cuisine.

Minister of Tourism of Goa, Rohan Khaunte recently announced a new mandate to ensure that beach shacks along the coastline must include the quintessential Goan dish – fish curry and rice – on their menus. This move is a part of the state's innovative Shack Policy, aimed at celebrating and revitalizing Goan culinary traditions.

Bringing Goan Flavor to the Forefront

Until this announcement, beach shacks in Goa dished out a mix of North Indian, Continental, and Asian cuisines, often overlooking their own regional delicacies. With this new policy, Goan fish curry and rice will take center stage, enticing tourists to savour the authentic flavours of the region.

The Shack Policy not only champions Goan cuisine but also addresses the issue of illegal hawkers and vendors on commercial beaches. Shack owners are now required to provide a comprehensive list of their staff, preventing unauthorized individuals from claiming association with these eateries.

Quality Over Quantity

Khaunte emphasized that these measures aim to prioritize quality over quantity. The goal is to collaborate closely with shack owners while maintaining a thriving tourism industry. Goa's fish curry and rice, a beloved coconut-based dish, symbolizes the state's culinary diversity, blending Hindu influences with its rich Portuguese heritage.

Khaunte's vision extends beyond cuisine; he stressed the importance of enhancing Goa's infrastructure to support its tourism industry fully. This mandate, therefore, not only serves as a culinary revival but also a commitment to the holistic development of Goa as a premier tourist destination.
