Sagar Bhalotia: The Foodie Founder

GenZ is known for its out-of-the-box thinking but no one till now has thought of using their unique thought process to grow their business or even risk their business, that is until now. Risk taker Sagar Balotia alongside his co-founder Anish Roy decided to use the unique GenZ point of view to launch their startup TagZ Foods.

The most that GenZ stands out for is their creative application of social media where nothing escapes their notice. From changing trends to upcoming trends, GenZ knows it all and follows it all and this power is exactly what Sagar decided to put to use.

Born and brought up by a middle-class family in Jaipur, Sagar decided to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Bombay and upon graduating he worked with many companies such as Quikr, OYO, FreshMeu, and HealthifyMe.

After a while, he decided to start his own business and left his stable job. He had wanted to do this since the beginning because from an early age, he wanted to have his own company and he was very passionate about it. This is mainly due to the reason that he was interested in finding solutions for the problems that he faced or encountered instead of complaining about them. He soon encountered another problem, the solution to which allowed him to form his startup.

When the people around him were too busy criticizing the innovative mind of GenZ, Sagar was too busy being impressed by them. He knew from the start that GenZ was going to be his target audience. Sagar was impressed by the GenZ and felt a connection with them.

He combined that connection he felt with them to his next passion and interest, food. He started delving into the food industry and decided to find a solution to the problems that he saw there. He noticed that everyone was looking around for healthier food options but there were hardly any healthy snack food options around them. Everything was drenched in oil and batter, it was unhealthy to consume yet people were addicted to them and could not stop eating them. So, what could be done about this?

Sagar decided to find a solution to this. He started with something simple and something that we are all in love with, potato chips. He noticed that we kept eating it continuously yet it failed to truly fill our stomachs and made us feel guilty once we were done eating it.

This idea is what gave birth to TagZ Foods in 2019. Sagar and Anish spent 11 months researching and trying to find a healthier and more satisfying option for potato chips. That’s when they managed to come up with a healthier alternative,  popped potato chips with 50% fewer fats which were not fried, not air-fried, not baked, not roasted, or not even vacuum fried.

This idea shocked the masses as they had never heard of this technology before. The method that they utilized was called “popping” which utilized high temperature and high pressure in order to make them which was why the chips did not consist of cholesterol, palm oil, gluten, trans fat, or artificial colors and flavors.

This was the first time ever the “popping” method was utilized to create healthy potato chips. What started as a simple idea to give people healthy alternatives soon turned into a big brand. Their journey was not easy and consisted of many ups and downs but they kept being persistent and did not give up soon they succeeded and now TagZ Foods has become the fastest food brand to achieve a revenue of rs 1000 crores. It has reached more than 2000 stores and online platforms. Their sales have crossed the oceans and in 2021, TagZ also presented its brand on Shark Tank India where ideas are pitched to the masses and funded.

For Sagar all this could not have been achieved on his own, he relied heavily on his co-founder and with his help, they succeeded. Their common goal helped them to move quickly together and achieve their solution.

Sagar’s family also supported him consistently and stood by his side. They pushed him to follow his passion and dreams. For Sagar, the mantra is to follow your dream and not just the people. His advice to fellow entrepreneurs is to understand why you are doing something before you do it because should you yourself not know the reason then your idea will fall apart.

Research is the most important thing because without proper research it will be difficult to execute any idea. We must be self-motivated and confident in ourselves.

Lastly, we must remember, “If you believe in what you are doing, then let nothing hold you up in your work.”
