Jennifer Lopez producing 'Bob the Builder' movie with Anthony Ramos at Mattel

Jennifer Lopez is co-producing a film featuring the popular children's TV character, Bob the Builder. In the movie, the character will be called "Roberto" and will be set in Puerto Rico. The film will explore the theme of building and celebrating Caribbean Latin nations. Anthony Ramos, known for his role in the hit musical Hamilton, will voice Roberto/Bob, who is famous for his catchphrase "Can we fix it? Yes, we can!". This announcement follows the recent success of the Barbie movie, which is also based on a Mattel character.

'Bob the Builder' aired on BBC TV in 1999

Bob the Builder, a TV show that aired on BBC TV in 1999, was known for its can-do attitude and spanned 12 series. The cheerful construction worker, who was voiced by Neil Morrissey, known for his roles in Men Behaving Badly and Line of Duty, was featured on global channels such as Nick Jr and PBS Kids. In 2015, as part of a Channel 5 makeover, the stop-motion format was replaced with computer-generated animation, and Lee Ingleby, the actor from Our Zoo, took over the role of Bob in the UK.

In the show, Bob, his coworker Wendy, and their friends "work together to get the job done". Ramos, who is also a co-producer, said he was "proud" to include elements of life "inspired by my own". He described the film as "a movie about friends working together, a celebration of a beautiful home they share, and how love can help to conquer any obstacle in your way".

Bob the Builder is just one of the children's characters being redefined for the big screen following the commercial and critical success of Greta Gerwig's Barbie. It was the highest-grossing film of 2023, receiving eight Oscar nominations, five Bafta nominations, and two Golden Globe awards.

Polly Pocket, directed by Lena Dunham and starring Lily Collins, is one of the current toy films in production. Daniel Kaluuya's Barney the Dinosaur is said to be "adult" and will "lean into millennial angst".
