What a year it has been for Greta Gerwig! Her directorial ‘Barbie’ became the highest grossing Movie of the year, Now she has been appointed as the president of the jury for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
At 40, Gerwig is set to make history as the first female U.S. director to lead the Cannes jury, succeeding "Triangle of Sadness" director Ruben Ostlund of Sweden, the head of the 2023 jury and a two-time Palme d'Or winner.
Adding to her historic role, Gerwig becomes the youngest person in almost six decades to preside over the jury, following in the footsteps of Sophia Loren, who, at the age of 31, assumed the role in 1966. She is described as a "heroine of our modern times.”
Expressing her excitement, Gerwig said Cannes had "always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of movies can be.”
"I am stunned and thrilled and humbled to be serving as the president of the Cannes Film Festival Jury. I cannot wait to see what journeys are in store for all of us”, she added.
In a joint statement, Festival organisers Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux praised Gerwig for embodying the renewal of world cinema, making her an obvious choice for the role.
Gerwig, acclaimed for "Lady Bird" and the adaptation of "Little Women," joins the ranks of esteemed Cannes jury presidents like Spike Lee, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Pedro Almodóvar, and Cate Blanchett.
Starring Margot Robbie, "Barbie" made cinematic history by achieving the biggest opening of 2023 and securing the highest box office earnings for any film directed by a woman, surpassing the April debut of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." The film's award season potential was highlighted as it earned nine nominations. As "Barbie" emerges as a frontrunner for the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice awards, anticipation builds for its performance at the Oscars.
The 77th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to occur from May 14-25, and the official selection will be revealed in mid-April.
