The University of Southampton, a prestigious institution from the United Kingdom, is set to establish its first Indian campus in the National Capital Region (NCR). The campus is scheduled to begin its academic programmes in July 2025, offering a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This makes Southampton University the third foreign university to establish a campus in India, following the recent establishment of campuses by Deakin University and the University of Wollongong at GIFT City in Gujarat.
First Foreign University Under UGC's New Regulations
The University of Southampton's move comes after the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the institution, making it the first foreign university to receive such an LoI under the UGC’s new regulations. These regulations, notified in November last year, are part of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, encouraging foreign universities to set up operations in India and vice versa. Southampton University, currently ranked 81st in the QS World University Rankings 2024 and 97th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024, will join the ranks of premier institutions expanding their global footprint in India.
Course Offerings and Future Plans
The Ministry of Education has confirmed that Southampton University has submitted a 10-year projected course rollout plan. In its inaugural year, the university will offer BSc degrees in computer science, business management, accounting and finance, economics, and MSc degrees in international management and finance. Additional courses, including BSc in software engineering, creative computing, MSc in economics, LLB, and B Eng in mechanical engineering, will be introduced in the subsequent years.
This development is expected to enhance India's educational landscape, providing students access to world-class education within the country.
