Busy Debate in the American Center
Chowringhee's American Center witnessed a zealous debate among college-going youngsters on the urgent need for military cooperation between India and the United States. This is the second edition of the Jefferson Debates 2024, the US consulate in Calcutta designed to deliberate over whether such cooperation is crucial for stability in Asia.
A Platform for Young Voices
There were 36 students from 12 colleges participating in the debate this year, with some of the participants coming from as great as St. Xavier's College and Jadavpur University. It was aimed at developing critical thinking and voiceful argument regarding global problems.
St Xavier's College emerged as the winner, with iLEAD as the first runner-up and Jadavpur University as third. Shoibayon Ganguly from St. Xavier's was declared the best speaker with his unique ability to express intricate ideas succinctly.
Insights from Leaders
US consul general Calcutta Kathy Giles-Diaz said such debates are the heart of a democratic society and enable students to think critically while confronting differing viewpoints. She urged participants to know their potential influence in future US-India relationships. Elizabeth Lee, director of the American Center, was the moderator for this program, which was judged by a jury of diverse professions.
