According to the police, a teacher in a school located in Assam's Majuli district reportedly cut the hair of over 30 students as a disciplinary measure during the morning assembly on Thursday. Following the incident, the deputy commissioner of the district has initiated an inquiry into the matter.According to the school authorities' statement, they explained to higher authorities that the students had violated the school's guidelines by keeping long hair. The authorities claimed that the students had been repeatedly warned, and their parents had been informed, but no action had been taken. The authorities justified the incident as a disciplinary measure. The teacher involved, named Nicky, stated that he simply followed the instructions given by the school authorities. However, as a result of the incident, the students are now refusing to attend classes, as reported by their parents.
According to the parents, while they acknowledge the school's authority to enforce discipline, they believe there should be limits. They expressed that while it is important for students to maintain cleanliness and a uniform appearance, publicly trimming their hair during the assembly was a humiliating act. The district administration officials stated that the state government's guidelines do not provide any provision for teachers to trim or chop off students' hair within the school premises. They highlighted the need to explore alternative methods of handling disciplinary issues with young students and assured an investigation into the incident to ascertain the full details of what occurred that day.
