The 400 new narrow-body aircraft in the carrier's fleet will use LEAP engines, according to an agreement between Air India and CFM International. 210 Airbus A320/A321 Neo and 190 Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft will be powered by the engines. In a release on Thursday, CFM stated that "both companies also signed a multi-year services agreement that will cover the airline's entire fleet of LEAP engines." In February, the ruling was initially made public. Since it started using A320 neo aircraft with CFM56-5B engines in 2002, Air India has been a CFM client. The airline started using the A320 Neo in 2017, making it the first LEAP-1A-powered carrier in India.
According to the press statement, the airline now has 27 A320neo family aircraft powered by LEAP-1A in its fleet. Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India, said: "We are happy to celebrate with CFM a significant contract that will play a critical part in our future development. The order, according to CFM International President and CEO Gal Méheust, expands the company's footprint in India. Air India ordered 470 aircraft earlier this year, including 70 wide-body models. Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aerospace have an equal stake in CFM International.
