BCCI suspends IPL for one week as India-Pakistan tensions escalate

The Indian Premier League has been suspended by the BCCI for one week on 9th May following the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. This move comes a day after the match between PBKS and DC was abandoned due to a blackout in Dharamshala. The crowd was asked to evacuate the stadium after Pakistan launched drone attacks on the northern part of the country, after which the floodlights of the stadium had to be turned off due to “blackout” measures.

The player's safety comes first

A cloud of uncertainty was looming over the season since the cancellation of yesterday’s match, and the BCCI Vice President gave a statement yesterday saying that

“The player's safety comes first”.

Today, a BCCI official said that

“It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war”.

MI vs PBKS was also shifted

Due to logistics and security reasons, the match between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings was shifted from Dharamshala to Ahmedabad on 8th May, whereas the DC  vs PBKS match was given a go-ahead, but that match was later cancelled due to security reasons and drone attacks by Pakistan.

A lot of players from different countries participate in this tournament, and due to the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions, the foreign players were anxious and were seeking reassurances from BCCI.  BCCI also organized a special Vande Bharat train for the players and officials who were in Dharamshala yesterday.

This is only the second time that IPL has been suspended between a season. Last time in May 2021, the league was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The BCCI will now take a decision after one week regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders, but for now, the league is suspended.
