Indian minister Sarbananda Sonowal opened the first Indian Lighthouse Festival at Fort Aguada in Goa on Saturday. He said that the festival is meant to make old lighthouses into popular tourist spots by working with private companies.

The inaugural meeting was also attended by Chief Minister of Goa Prateek Sawant, State Minister for Ports, Shipping, Waterways & Tourism Shripad naik, and Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khunete.
The Chief Minister said that the government has a vision to turn the lighthouses into tourism destinations, breathe new life into the historic structures, and create new opportunities for the local communities and businesses.
The first-ever Indian Lighthouse Festival will be held at Fort Aguada in Goa from September 23-25, 2023. The three-day carnival-style event will feature local artists, dance troupes, food stalls, music concerts, and other activities to attract people to lighthouses. Historians, archaeologists, cultural anthropologists, and others interested in history, culture, and society will also participate in discussions about India's maritime history.
