The much-anticipated Valley of Flowers trek in Uttarakhand is officially open to visitors, inviting adventurers to explore one of India's most stunning natural wonders. As of June 1st, 2024, trekkers can embark on a journey through the beautiful Valley of Flowers National Park, nestled within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
A Long-Awaited Adventure Begins
Enthusiasts can plan a three-day, 17-km adventure through this floral paradise, starting from either Govindghat or Pulna village. The trek is accessible through the monsoon season until October and November, offering a unique opportunity to witness over 300 indigenous flower species thriving in the Himalayan landscape. Early spring blooms, such as potentilla, wild rose, and primrose, have already started to adorn the valley, heralding a vibrant floral spectacle following the snowmelt.
A Blooming Wonderland
Visitors will encounter a diverse array of flowers, including anemones, geraniums, blue poppies, and bluebells, among others. The captivating floral display, set against the backdrop of towering peaks, is complemented by glimpses of rare wildlife species like the grey langur, flying squirrel, Himalayan weasel, black bear, red fox, lime butterfly, snow leopard, and Himalayan monal.
A Trek Through Spectacle of Nature
Spanning 87 sq km in Chamoli district, the Valley of Flowers National Park is one of the core zones within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, alongside the Nanda Devi National Park. According to legend, this breathtaking valley was discovered in 1931 by three British mountaineers who stumbled upon it while lost.
Home to over 600 varieties of exotic flowers, including anemones, orchids, poppies, primulas, marigolds, and daisies, the valley offers a mesmerizing spectacle. Along the trek, travelers will be treated to sights of cascading waterfalls and untamed streams, enhancing the journey to the valley's heart. The valley also shelters diverse fauna, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts.
Getting There
For those planning their journey, the nearest railway station is in Rishikesh, approximately 262 km away, while the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is about 270 km away. Travelers can opt for a cab or self-drive to reach Govindghat, situated at an elevation of around 6,000 ft above sea level.
