Air India is set to introduce new uniforms for its flying crew, ground staff, and security personnel, designed by renowned fashion designer Manish Malhotra. The move is part of the airline's efforts to revitalise and modernise its brand identity. By the end of this year, Air India will introduce its first wide-body A350 aircraft to its fleet, which will coincide with the launch of the new uniforms. Malhotra and his team have already begun meeting with the airline's frontline staff to understand their specific needs and conduct fitting sessions.
The collaboration between Air India and Malhotra aims to combine elements of the airline's brand, heritage, and culture with the unique requirements of the aviation industry. The CEO and MD of Air India, Campbell Wilson, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating that they hope to create a fresh and exciting new look that represents the new Air India.
The new uniforms will be designed for over 10,000 employees, including cabin crew, cockpit crew, ground staff, and security personnel. Currently, female cabin crew wear sarees or kurtas in red or blue, while male cabin crew sport white shirts, black trousers, and a black jacket. The aim of the collaboration is to create uniforms that blend comfort, authenticity, and timeless elegance.
Air India's new uniforms are expected to be introduced alongside the induction of the A350 aircraft later this year. The airline recently unveiled its new brand identity, 'The Vista,' which draws inspiration from the peak of a golden window frame, symbolising limitless possibilities. Air India is also in the process of consolidating its airline business, with AIX Connect merging with Air India Express and Vistara merging with Air India.
The Tata Group took control of Air India from the government in January 2021 and has been working towards transforming the airline's operations and image. Earlier this year, Air India placed orders for 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, signalling its commitment to growth and expansion in the aviation industry. The collaboration with Manish Malhotra is another step towards enhancing Air India's brand and providing a fresh and modern look for its employees.
