Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, will be unveiling the world's first Toyota Innova model that runs entirely on ethanol on Tuesday, August 29. Speaking at the Mint Sustainability Summit, the minister shared details.
Gadkari has been pushing automakers to produce green and alternative fuel-powered vehicles. He introduced a hydrogen-powered vehicle, the Toyota Mirai EV, last year.
The minister declared, "On August 29, I am going to launch the popular (Toyota) Innova car on 100 percent ethanol." Also, this will be the first BS-VI (Stage-II), electric flex-fuel car in the world, according to sources from PTI.
“If we want to become Atamnirbhar (self-reliant) we have to bring this oil import to zero. At present it is ₹16 lakh crore. This is a big loss to the economy. India needs to take more sustainable measures as pollution is a big problem in the country," Gadkari asserted.
He stated that when the country's petrol prices rose in 2004, he became interested in biofuels and visited Brazil for the same purpose. Gadkari believes that biofuels can work miracles and help save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on importing tonnes of petroleum.
“We have taken a lot of (sustainability) initiatives but we need to take more because pollution is a problem. Ecology and the environment are very important," he said as quoted by PTI.
Further, the minister continued by saying, "We need to reduce air and water pollution. We have to improve the quality of water in our rivers. This is a big challenge. We need to protect our ecology and environment."
