Users of X (formerly known as Twitter) will soon be able to call one another without needing a phone number, according to Elon Musk's announcement today. The capability appears to be compatible with the majority of operating systems, including iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows.
The platform will soon support video and audio chats, with X acting as the "effective global address book," as per a post by Musk on X. It could mean that users can call everyone else by looking up their usernames instead of saving their phone numbers.
In an interview with CNBC earlier this month, X CEO Linda Yaccarino affirmed that the platform is attempting to offer the functionality. Designer Andrea Conway from X also provided images of the new video calling tool, which resembles Instagram's feature and is located in the upper right corner of X's DM menu.
Furthermore, X has implemented limitations to prevent spam calls, but it's likely that the platform will prevent non-premium users from using particular services.
Although the social media platform currently provides a method to have live talks through "Spaces," the function is not appropriate for a one-on-one conversation because it is intended for individuals to have debates.
Making calls on X could help the platform stand out from competitors like Threads and Bluesky. The choice seems to be in line with Musk's intention for X to develop into a feature-rich app resembling WeChat. Musk has not yet said whether or not the feature will be restricted to Blue subscribers or when it will be open to all users.
