Meta is shutting down its "Facebook News" feature in the UK, France, and Germany later this year. However, users will still be able to view links to news articles, and news publishers will continue to have access to their Facebook accounts and pages.
However, Facebook is not going to sign into new commercial agreements for news content on "Facebook News" or offer new product innovations to news publishers in certain countries.
"News makes up less than 3% of what people around the world see in their Facebook feed, so news discovery is only a small part of the Facebook experience for the vast majority of people," Meta said in a blog post.
The discontinuation of Facebook News for certain European users follows the company's recent action of blocking access to news content on both Facebook and Instagram in Canada. This decision was made in response to a newly enacted law that mandated tech companies to compensate news outlets for the distribution of their content.
Meta expressed its disagreement with the Canadian law, contending that the legislation distorts the value news outlets gain when opting to utilize their platforms. Meta also asserted that the law is grounded in the inaccurate belief that Meta gains an unjust advantage from the news content shared on its platforms.
