US-based startup launches 'Rabbit R1', a mini AI assistant

A US-based startup has launched Rabbit R1, a pocket-sized AI assistant that runs on a customised operating system. The device, developed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, seeks to eliminate the need to interact with apps on a smartphone. According to the company's shared details, the Rabbit R1 uses a "Large Action Model" that uses AI-powered "rabbits" to replicate the process of interacting with apps and completing tasks on behalf of the user via a cloud platform.

The mission is to create the simplest computer, says Rabbit's Founder

Rabbit R1 is a pocket-sized device powered by a natural language operating system. The goal is to make app interactions history by presenting a new way to manage our lives. “Our mission is to create the simplest computer, something so intuitive that you don’t need to learn how to use it,” said Jesse Lyu, Rabbit’s founder, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2024 in Las Vegas.

Lyu highlighted that smartphones have become hubs of time-consuming entertainment, flipping their original purpose. He also threw shade at the concept of apps themselves, calling them cumbersome and blaming them for making us squint at screens for endless periods

During the keynote, Lyu demonstrated how the R1's proprietary operating system, Rabbit OS, integrates seamlessly with these services. What distinguishes Rabbit OS is that it does more than just connect to third-party services; it effectively "sees" the apps and performs actions on your behalf, streamlining everything with simple voice commands.

Rabbit R1 specifications, price

The Rabbit R1 can learn and analyze app interactions through AI technology (highlighting its powerful Large Action Model) and execute them on your behalf. In its demonstration, the company disclosed that users can currently link their accounts to various services such as Spotify, Uber, Doordash, Expedia, and Amazon, using a secure web portal named the "Rabbit hole".

The Rabbit R1 will cost $199 (roughly Rs. 16,500) and come in orange. The company expects US shipping to begin in April for devices pre-ordered by March 31. The Rabbit R1 will be available in Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, South Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom later this year. The startup also states that the retail price of the device excludes taxes and shipping for international orders. The highlighted specifications are given below:

• Powerful MediaTek chipset with 4GB RAM and 128GB inbuilt storage.
• 2.88-inch touchscreen display for AI tasks, weather details, and music controls.
• Supports Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connectivity via a SIM card slot.
• Equipped with a 360-degree rotating camera with privacy mode and video calling capabilities.
• Comes with a 1,000mAh battery and USB Type-C charging port.

Rabbit aims to untangle the mess by launching a tiny pocket-sized device that responds to your voice for every smartphone task imaginable, including hailing a ride, ordering food and groceries, and the usual stuff like sending messages, making calls, and listening to Spotify.
