Google has announced that it will be removing the lock icon that appears in the address bar when a website is loaded over HTTPS. The tech giant plans to replace the lock icon with a variant of the tune icon, commonly associated with settings or controls, to avoid implying trustworthiness. The lock icon has been used since the 1990s to indicate a secure connection between the browser and the site. However, Google states that it is now a remnant of an era where HTTPS was uncommon. In a recent blog post, Google emphasized that security should be the default state in Chrome and that the new icon will help make permission controls and security information more accessible. As part of a desktop platform design update, Google plans to introduce the new tune icon with Chrome 117 in early September 2023.
