Reliance and Tata Partner with Nvidia to transform India into AI export hub

The world's largest democracy is poised for an enormous transition, tapping on the huge promise of AI technology at scale.  NVIDIA Founder and CEO Jensen Huang outlined intentions to bring AI solutions to solve India's most pressing concerns at a recent press conference in Bengaluru. These developments follow substantial announcements from Reliance Industries Limited and Tata Group, India's two largest business organizations.

Huang expressed his belief that India is poised to become one of the world's largest AI markets. He has spent the past week participating in high-level discussions across the country, meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading AI researchers,  business figures, members of the press and 4,000 employees of NVIDIA in India. Working together, these companies will establish AI computing infrastructure and platforms to accelerate the development of AI solutions. This infrastructure will be powered by NVIDIA technology, including the revolutionary NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper super chip and NVIDIA DGX Cloud. Superchip GH200 represents a significant change in computing architecture, delivering outstanding performance and expanded memory bandwidth. Meanwhile, DGX Cloud, a cloud-hosted AI supercomputing service, simplifies the process for businesses to train their employees on AI technologies, access internal AI resources, and provide providing synthetic AI services to their customers.

       

Huang emphasized the importance of IT expertise in India, calling it an essential skill. With access to technology and capital, India is well-positioned to use AI to solve challenges at home and beyond. Huang also emphasized India's strength in information technology, describing it as a natural resource produced on an impressive scale and exported around the world.

Jensen Huang calls this “India's AI Moment” after meeting with top technology leaders, startup pioneers, AI advocates and key players in the infrastructure sector of India's digital public sphere. He believes that India is ready to become a global powerhouse in AI. Despite India's technological might, many of its 1.4 billion people, who live in diverse regions and speak many languages, have not yet fully benefited from these advances. In the Indian context, AI has the potential to help rural farmers access weather information and agricultural prices through mobile phones in their local languages. It can also provide expert medical diagnoses and imaging tests on a large scale, especially in areas with limited access to doctors. Additionally, AI can improve tornado forecasting by using decades of atmospheric data, allowing for faster evacuations and better shelter for those at risk. 

Reliance Industries and Tata Communications will collaborate to set up advanced AI supercomputing data centres based on this technology. These centres will serve both in-house AI development and provide infrastructure as a service to researchers, Indian AI enterprises and the growing AI startup ecosystem.  NVIDIA will provide Jio with comprehensive AI supercomputing technologies, including operating systems and CPUs, GPUs, networks, and AI frameworks to build AI models. Jio will oversee the management and maintenance of the AI ​​cloud infrastructure. Along with the Tata Group, NVIDIA has a three-pronged strategy. They aim to develop general AI applications, provide AI training to over six million employees of India's largest IT services company, TCS, and partner with Tata Motors to integrate AI into their devices. design, style, engineering, simulation testing, and capabilities of self-driving vehicles. Additionally, they will help Tata Communications create AI infrastructure.     

Huang sees this collaborative effort as an important step in making India a bright spot for AI technology, emphasizing that AI can be created in India, used in India and exported from India Degree. It also supports the view that India enjoys sovereignty over AI, recognizing the country's unique national security and data requirements, which can require infrastructure development regardless of concerns about cost-effectiveness.
