Italy has temporarily blocked the use of the artificial intelligence software ChatGPT following a data breach as the government investigates a possible violation of European Union data protection rules. The Italian Data Protection Authority has taken provisional action to limit the company from processing Italian users' data until it respects privacy. OpenAI, which developed the chatbot, said it has disabled ChatGPT for Italian users at the government's request, and it hopes to make the chatbot available again soon. The ban only applies to the web version of ChatGPT and is not expected to have an impact on software applications from companies that have already obtained licenses from OpenAI to use the same technology. The Italian Data Protection Authority has instructed OpenAI to provide a report within 20 days detailing the measures it has taken to protect users' data privacy. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to 20 million euros or 4% of the company's annual global revenue.
The Italian privacy watchdog has raised concerns over whether OpenAI had legal grounds for the "massive collection and processing of personal data" used to train its algorithms on the platform. It also noted there's no system to verify users' ages, exposing children to responses "absolutely inappropriate to their age and awareness." Meanwhile, concerns grow about the artificial intelligence boom. Scientists and tech industry leaders penned a letter urging companies like OpenAI to temporarily halt the advancement of more powerful AI models until autumn to allow society to evaluate the potential risks.
