Media Startup ‘Semafor’, led by former BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith, announced the launch of a global breaking news live feed named 'Signals', powered by AI tools from tech giants Microsoft and OpenAI, which will highlight breaking news and analysis using AI to rapidly surface reporting from global sources.
Semafor introduced 'Signals' after its recognition of the limitations in current digital live coverage, which often prioritise search engine rankings over human understanding. Signals aims to deliver a diverse array of perspectives and insights on breaking news to readers worldwide
According to the company, Signals will empower journalists to provide comprehensive reports by leveraging AI tools to access news sources across languages and geographies, thereby expanding their reach and enriching the depth of coverage.
The tools powered by AI will empower journalists to efficiently search through a variety of international news sources, choose pertinent articles, and even offer translation services to seamlessly integrate international perspectives.
The details about Microsoft's financial backing of Semafor's 'Signals' remain undisclosed; the partnership represents a significant investment in leveraging AI to enhance news reporting capabilities.

Microsoft’s Inputs in AI integration in journalism
In a blog post, Microsoft mentioned that, collaborating with Semafor and other news organisations, it has pledged support for responsible AI integration in journalism. Microsoft has collaboration with other media outlets including the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and the Online News Association.
Microscoft emphasised that through these partnerships, the company will assist organizations in discerning and enhancing protocols and guidelines for the ethical utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) in both news gathering and business operations.
This comes amid Microsoft and Open AI facing lawsuits filed by The New York Times for alleged copyright infringement over the alleged use of the publication’s articles to train AI tools. Despite this contention, OpenAI has defended its practices, emphasising partnerships with media organisations to ensure ethical use of AI technologies.
