WhatsApp stands as a highly popular instant messaging app in the country, with millions of people using it daily to communicate with friends, family, colleagues, and more.
However, it is also known that WhatsApp is also a platform for spreading fake news and spam, especially during the election season. In the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the government of India is considering introducing a law according to which WhatsApp will be required to share information about the first sender of the message. This law is intended to combat the spread of deepfakes on the platform.
According to reports, Meta company will undermine user’s privacy as details of conversations between two people are not available to the company.
According to The Indian Express report, WhatsApp's request for the original sender of messages is linked to the prevalence of deepfake videos featuring politicians that frequently circulate on the messaging platform. Under the Information Technology (IT) Rules 2021, the government could also potentially compel the company to disclose the identities of individuals who initially shared these videos.
WhatsApp is also reportedly planning to introduce a new feature to protect users' privacy. The new feature will allow users to conceal their IP address in calls, which will help protect them from malicious actors The new option, as spotted by WABetaInfo, is currently available on WhatsApp beta for Android and iOS users.
The new feature is currently only available on the WhatsApp beta for a few Android and iOS users, according to WABetaInfo. WhatsApp is currently only allowing a few users to hide IP addresses, but in the future, the company plans to make this feature available to everyone. The exact date for the rollout of this new feature is still unknown.
