Google's Desperate Plea: Larry Page and Sergey Brin Called in to Battle Artificial Intelligence

The creators of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, met with various business leaders last month. The subject was a competitor's brand-new chatbot, an avant-garde piece of artificial intelligence technology that appeared to pose the first significant challenge to Google's $149 billion search business in decades.

Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin have always had a keen interest in artificial intelligence (AI). Last month, they were called upon by the company's current chief executive, Sundar Pichai, to review Google's AI product strategy. This was prompted by the release of OpenAI's chatbot, which quickly amassed one million users and sparked concerns over misinformation due to its inability to fact-check itself.

According to two people with knowledge of the conversations, Page and Brin, who had been away from Google since they quit their day jobs in 2019, evaluated Google's AI product strategy.

The fact that Google's founders returned to the firm at Sundar Pichai's invitation highlighted the sense of urgency that many Google executives had regarding AI and that chatbot, ChatGPT.

After several meetings with company executives, Page and Brin approved plans and pitched ideas to put more chatbot features into Google's search engine. They also advised company leaders in light of the cost-of-living crisis across the UK and Friday's announcement of Google's sweeping workforce cuts. As a result of their re-engagement this year, Google plans to introduce more than 20 new products and show off a chatbot-enhanced search engine.
