Google unveils AI-powered email writing assistant to enhance your communication effortlessly

During Google's I/O conference in 2023, CEO Sundar Pichai announced the introduction of "Help me write," an AI-powered feature integrated into Gmail. This feature is designed to assist users in generating email responses. In a live demonstration, Pichai showcased the tool by using it to respond to an email regarding a flight cancellation. The user selected the "Help me write" icon and entered a prompt such as "Ask for a full refund for this cancelled flight." The tool quickly generated a response draft, incorporating relevant details from the airline's message and requesting the desired refund. To refine the generated response, the tool provides options such as "formalize," "elaborate," and "shorten."

During the demonstration, Pichai selected the "elaborate" option to increase the chances of obtaining a refund. As a result, the tool incorporated statements such as "I firmly believe that a full refund is the most appropriate means of compensating me for the difficulties I have encountered. "Help me write" was initially rolled out to a select group of "trusted testers" in March as part of Google's ongoing efforts to enhance its Workspace suite with generative AI capabilities. During the event, Aparna Pappu of Google mentioned plans to integrate AI features into various Workspace tools, including brainstorming and proofreading text in Docs, generating images, audio, and video in Slides, and analyzing data in Sheets, among others.

While these features will be initially accessible to trusted testers, Google aims to eventually incorporate them into its "Duet AI for Workspace" service. However, no specific details were provided regarding the timeline for the general public's access to the tool. This new tool comes after Google's beta launch of Bard, a ChatGPT competitor, to select users. However, during testing, Google employees expressed concerns about Bard's readiness, describing it as "cringeworthy" and a "pathological liar." During a demo in February, the chatbot even made a factual error.
