Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has attributed a series of outages on his social media platform, X, to a "massive cyberattack" originating from Ukraine. Throughout Monday, users experienced repeated disruptions, with the platform going offline, restoring briefly, and then crashing again.
Speaking to Fox Business, Musk stated, "We're not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area."
Timeline of the Outage on X
-
On Monday, X experienced multiple service disruptions, preventing users from accessing their feeds.
-
Downdetector, a site monitoring online outages, reported a significant spike in user complaints.
-
By 10 AM ET, outage reports in the U.S. had peaked at 39,021.
-
The service temporarily returned to normal but faced another wave of disruptions around midday.
Alleged Cyberattack and Expert Reactions
Musk suggested that the outage was a result of a coordinated cyberattack, potentially backed by "a large, organized group and/or a country with substantial resources."
However, cybersecurity experts have scrutinized his claims, particularly his assertion that the IP addresses traced back to Ukraine. Experts pointed out that tracing an IP address does not definitively indicate the source of an attack, as attackers can easily use proxy servers or compromised systems in other regions.
The Associated Press cited cybersecurity professionals who dismissed the idea that Ukraine was necessarily behind the attack, noting that "denial of service" attacks are often carried out by smaller hacker groups rather than nation-states.
Political Implications and Skepticism
Experts have also raised concerns over the timing of Musk’s allegations, given the upcoming U.S.-Ukraine intelligence-sharing discussions.
-
Alex Plitsas from the Atlantic Council told The New York Post that it would be counterproductive for Ukrainian hackers to target X just before crucial talks with the U.S.
-
Ukraine is actively seeking intelligence-sharing support from the U.S. and pushing for more military aid and assistance.
-
This has led many analysts to question whether there could be an ulterior motive behind Musk's claims.
Musk's Past Comments on Ukraine and Starlink
Musk has previously made controversial remarks regarding Ukraine. He claimed that the Ukrainian military heavily relies on his Starlink satellite service, stating that the "entire front line would collapse" without it.
He has also drawn attention for challenging Russian President Vladimir Putin to a "one-on-one combat" over the Ukraine conflict. While defending his position, Musk posted on X, "What I am sickened by is years of slaughter in a stalemate that Ukraine will inevitably lose."
Setbacks for Musk Amid X Outage
The recent cyberattack allegations come at a time when Musk is facing multiple challenges across his businesses:
-
Net Worth Decline: According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk’s net worth has plunged by $132 billion since the start of the year.
-
SpaceX Starship Explosion: On March 7, SpaceX’s Starship rocket exploded mid-flight, scattering debris over Florida and the Bahamas.
-
Tesla Protests and Sales Decline: Tesla has been dealing with widespread protests in the U.S. over Musk’s ties to the Donald Trump administration. Additionally, Tesla’s sales have sharply declined in key markets like China and Germany, leading to a significant drop in the company’s stock value.
As Musk grapples with these challenges, the cyberattack claims add another layer of controversy to his already eventful year. The coming weeks will determine whether the allegations hold weight or remain a subject of speculation.
