-
Space and Defence Technologies
By investing in these sectors, the Institute aims to create an environment that fuels disruptive innovation and contributes actively to India’s scientific and strategic ambitions.
3. Industry & Society-Relevant Research and Translation
IIT Bombay envisions deeper and more structured engagement with industry, government bodies, and civil society. This theme underscores the Institute’s commitment to ensuring that research outcomes move beyond laboratories and generate direct socio-economic impact.
This includes:
-
Stronger industry-academia partnerships.
-
Accelerated commercialization of research.
-
Expanded support for startups and early-stage ventures.
-
A focus on solutions addressing national challenges across healthcare, sustainability, defence, infrastructure, and more.
Six Foundational Pillars Enabling the Vision
To operationalize its strategic goals, IIT Bombay has identified six enabling pillars that will support sustained institutional transformation:
-
Strengthening Faculty Value Proposition – Enhancing recruitment, development, and retention of world-class faculty.

The Strategy Plan, approved by the IIT Bombay Board of Governors, was crafted through extensive consultations involving faculty, students, alumni, industry leaders, and staff—making it a holistic blueprint for the Institute’s long-term evolution.
India’s First Academia-Linked Deep Tech VC Fund: The Y-Point Venture Capital Fund
In parallel with the strategic roadmap, IIT Bombay’s incubator SINE has launched a groundbreaking initiative—the INR 250-crore Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, which makes IIT Bombay the first academic institution in India to manage a deep-tech VC fund through an incubator.
This initiative is designed to fill a critical funding gap for early-stage deep-tech startups, which often struggle due to long development cycles, capital-intensive technologies, and the need for specialized validation and mentorship.
Why This Fund Matters
For over two decades, SINE has nurtured more than 500 startups and supported 1,000+ innovators, giving it unparalleled insight into the challenges faced by deep-tech founders. From high research costs to longer gestation periods and complex market pathways, deep-tech ventures require far more than conventional startup support mechanisms.
The Y-Point Fund is specifically structured to address these needs by:
-
Investing in 25–30 pre-seed and seed-stage startups.
-
Offering ticket sizes of up to INR 15 crore.
-
Supporting ventures emerging not only from IIT Bombay but also from other premier institutions and research organizations.
The fund has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and is officially registered as a Category II Alternative Investment Fund (AIF).
Investment Focus Areas
The fund will prioritize startups rooted in deep scientific research and high-impact technologies. The key sectors include:
-
Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing
-
Advanced Manufacturing
-
Advanced Materials
-
Nuclear Technology
-
Space and Defence
-
Climate & CleanTech
-
Life Sciences and Healthcare
These areas mirror India’s strategic needs and global trends, positioning the fund to accelerate the nation’s tech leadership.
Leaders Speak: A Defining Moment for India’s Innovation Ecosystem
During the launch, numerous leaders from IIT Bombay and the government underscored the significance of the fund and its long-term value for India’s innovation landscape.
Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, emphasized that the fund will “serve as a catalyst for building globally competitive ventures by leveraging world-class talent and cutting-edge research.” He described it as a crucial mechanism to accelerate the journey from laboratory breakthroughs to market-ready technologies.
Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, highlighted the critical role SINE has played in shaping the Institute’s thriving startup ecosystem. He noted that the new fund reinforces SINE’s ability to speed up the transition from research to commercialization, making it the first-of-its-kind institution-linked investment manager supporting deep-tech ventures.
Prof. Milind Atrey emphasized the fund’s potential to drive innovations built on strong intellectual property while delivering large-scale societal impact.
SINE’s CEO, Mr. Shaji Varghese, shared that fundraising efforts are already underway and expected to be completed within 6–9 months. Preliminary evaluations have begun, and the fund is likely to make 2–3 investments soon.
Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, congratulated IIT Bombay for launching two pivotal initiatives on the same day. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Nishant Sharma, Professor-in-Charge of SINE.
A Transformational Step for India’s Deep Tech Future
The simultaneous launch of IIT Bombay’s Strategy Plan and SINE’s Y-Point Venture Capital Fund marks a defining moment not only for the Institute but also for India’s wider research and startup ecosystem.
