WB Sports Minister and Cricketer Manoj Tiwary bids farewell to cricket

The West Bengal Sports Minister and 37-year-old senior cricketer Manoj Tiwary announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, August 3. Tiwary captained Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, guiding the team to the championship, and continued to play domestic cricket until February 2023.

Manoj Tiwary represented India in 12 ODIs and 3 T20Is between 2008 and 2015 throughout his international career. Notably, he reached a century in the toughest ODI format.

In a touching Instagram post, Tiwary expressed his appreciation for everything the sport of cricket had given him, particularly at difficult moments in his life. He praised God for being with him throughout the entire voyage.

Manoj Tiwary played for Bengal and enjoyed a successful domestic cricket career. He also represented different teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He struggled with inconsistent appearances and times of being ignored on the international circuit despite his outstanding results in domestic cricket.

In the 2007-2008 Commonwealth Bank Series matchup with Australia, Tiwary made his international debut. Although he hit his first ODI century against the West Indies, he struggled with inconsistent selection, which also had an impact on his T20 international career.

Tiwary thanked his wife, past teammates, and coach Manabendra Ghosh in his retirement statement for their continuous support throughout his cricket career. He paid Manabendra Ghosh a special tribute, praising him as a father figure and the foundation of his cricket career.

Manoj Tiwary persevered in domestic cricket with good showings in the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy despite losses in international cricket. In November 2018, he scored his fifth double-century in first-class cricket, and in January 2020, he scored his first triple-century.

In addition to his cricketing endeavours, Tiwary entered politics in 2021 and joined the All India Trinamool Congress party. Later in the year, he won a seat in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and is now Bengal's Minister of Sports.
