Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has decided to skip the white-ball leg of the upcoming Indian tour of South Africa. The tour, scheduled to begin on December 10, includes three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests. Kohli has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will be available for red-ball cricket, which starts on December 26.
According to sources, Kohli has requested a break from white-ball cricket and will inform the BCCI about his availability for future white-ball matches. However, he has confirmed his availability for the two Test matches in South Africa.
Kohli's decision comes after his outstanding performance in the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023, where India finished as runners-up. Kohli was the highest run scorer in the tournament, accumulating 765 runs in 11 innings at an average of 95.62. He scored three centuries and six fifties, setting a record for the most fifty-plus scores in a single edition of the ODI World Cup.
Moreover, Kohli became the first player in history to score 50 ODI hundreds during the tournament, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 centuries. With a total of 13,848 runs in 292 matches, Kohli is considered one of the greatest ODI batters of all time, ranking third in terms of overall runs behind Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.
