Smriti Mandhana, India’s star opener and one of the brightest names in world cricket, etched her name in the history books on Sunday during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup clash against Australia in Visakhapatnam. While India fell short in a thrilling encounter, Mandhana’s breathtaking performance not only won hearts but also shattered multiple records, including one previously held by batting legend Virat Kohli.
With her sublime knock of 80 off 66 balls, the 29-year-old southpaw became the fastest Indian—male or female—to reach 5,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). She achieved this milestone in just 112 innings, surpassing Kohli’s record of 114 innings. In doing so, Mandhana also became the youngest Indian to achieve the feat and the fastest woman cricketer in the world to do so.
Smriti Mandhana Joins an Elite Club of ODI Greats
Mandhana’s achievement places her among the crème de la crème of world cricket. In the overall list of both men’s and women’s cricket, only Pakistan’s Babar Azam (97 innings) and South Africa’s Hashim Amla (101 innings) have reached 5,000 ODI runs faster.
In women’s cricket, Mandhana now leads the all-time list by a wide margin. The next four players—Stafanie Taylor (West Indies, 129 innings), Suzie Bates (New Zealand, 136 innings), Mithali Raj (India, 144 innings), and Charlotte Edwards (England, 146 innings)—are all far behind the Indian opener in terms of innings taken to reach the milestone.
At 29 years and 68 days, Mandhana is also the youngest to reach 5,000 ODI runs, completing the feat in 112 innings and 5,569 balls, breaking records for both speed and consistency.
Her overall ODI record now stands at 5,000 runs in 112 matches at an average of 47.37, including 13 centuries and 33 fifties—a testament to her dominance at the top of the order.

Breaking Virat Kohli’s Iconic Record
When Mandhana crossed the 5,000-run mark during her fluent 80-run innings against Australia, she didn’t just make history in women’s cricket—she rewrote the record books for all Indian batters.
Kohli, often hailed as India’s modern-day batting genius, had previously held the record as the fastest Indian to reach 5,000 ODI runs (114 innings). Mandhana bettered his mark by two innings, a rare feat that underlines her consistency and stature in the modern game.
A Record-Breaking Calendar Year
As if surpassing Kohli wasn’t enough, Mandhana also achieved another historic milestone during the same innings—she became the first-ever woman batter in history to cross 1,000 ODI runs in a single calendar year.
Heading into the match, she had already surpassed the long-standing record of 970 runs set by Australia’s Belinda Clark in 1997. With Sunday’s knock, Mandhana took her tally to a staggering 1,062 runs in 18 innings, at an average of 59.00 and a strike rate of 112.85.
Her 2025 season so far includes four centuries and four half-centuries, making it one of the most prolific years ever recorded in women’s ODI history.
Smriti Mandhana: Australia’s Ultimate Nemesis
Mandhana’s dominance over the Australian bowling attack is well-known—and Sunday’s innings further reinforced that reputation. Her last five ODI scores against Australia read: 105, 58, 117, 125, and 80.
She is now the only batter in history to register five consecutive 50-plus scores against Australia Women in ODIs. In total, across 20 ODIs against Australia, she has amassed 996 runs at an average of 49.80 and a blistering strike rate of 108.02, including four centuries and six fifties.
Much like Virat Kohli—who also wears the number 18 jersey—Mandhana has become Australia’s most persistent tormentor on the field.
The Historic Partnership: Mandhana and Pratika Rawal
India’s batting success in the match was anchored by a sensational opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal. The duo added 155 runs for the first wicket, the highest-ever opening stand against Australia in Women’s World Cup history, surpassing the previous best of 101 by England’s Bakewell and Thomas in 1973.
Pratika Rawal’s contribution—75 runs off 96 balls with 10 fours and a six—was equally impressive. Together, Mandhana and Rawal have formed a formidable opening combination for India, having already registered six century stands in 21 innings, the second-highest for any Indian pair after Mithali Raj and Punam Raut (seven in 34 innings).
In the ongoing calendar year alone, they have stitched together four century partnerships, the second-highest ever in a single year, behind Belinda Clark and Lisa Keightley’s record of five.
Annabel Sutherland’s Birthday Brilliance
While Mandhana stole the headlines for India, Australia’s Annabel Sutherland had a day to remember as well. Celebrating her 24th birthday, Sutherland produced a career-best spell of 5/40, her maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs.
In the process, she also completed 50 ODI wickets, ending the match with a total of 53 scalps to her name.
Sutherland became the first woman cricketer in history to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI on her birthday, and only the second player overall to do so in ODI cricket, after Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, who achieved the feat against South Africa in 2024.
Her spell dismantled India’s middle and lower order, reducing them from a strong 234/2 to 330 all out in 48.5 overs after a powerful start.

India’s Record-Breaking Total
Despite the collapse, India’s total of 330 runs was still a historic one—it marked their highest-ever total in the history of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, surpassing their previous best of 317/8 against the West Indies in 2022 at Hamilton.
Apart from Mandhana and Rawal’s heroics, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (22 off 17), Jemimah Rodrigues (33 off 21), and Richa Ghosh (32 off 22) all played quick cameos, ensuring India posted a challenging target.
Alyssa Healy’s Stunning Century Leads Australia’s Historic Chase
Australia, known for their unmatched dominance in women’s cricket, once again proved their mettle by chasing down the record target of 331—the highest successful run chase in the history of women’s ODIs.
The chase was anchored by skipper Alyssa Healy, who played a spectacular knock of 142 off 107 balls, laced with 21 fours and three sixes. Her innings is now the highest score in a Women’s ODI run chase against India, and the second-highest individual score against India overall, only behind Claire Taylor’s 156 in 2006*.
Healy’s ton also drew her level with Karen Rolton and Meg Lanning for the most centuries by an Australian in World Cup history (three each).
Australia’s pursuit of the mammoth total was bolstered by crucial contributions from Phoebe Litchfield (40), Ashleigh Gardner (45), and a resilient unbeaten 47 from Ellyse Perry, who returned from injury to finish the match in style.
Perry’s six in the 49th over sealed a three-wicket victory, making it the highest chase in Women’s World Cup history, surpassing their own previous best of 278 against India in 2022.
