Indian football teams to play Asian Games 2023

In Group A of the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the Indian men's football team will compete against the hosts, the People's Republic of China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. With Chinese Taipei and Thailand, the Indian women's football squad will compete in Group B. On Thursday, Hangzhou hosted the official Asian Games team drawings.

The Indian men, who are now rated 99th in the FIFA rankings, will be China's closest competitor at the Asian Games 2023, with an 80th-place position. In comparison to Bangladesh, Myanmar is ranked 189th.

The Indian men's football team won gold medals in the Asian Games in New Delhi in 1951 and in Jakarta in 1962, while also taking home a bronze in Bangkok in 1970. For the Indian men's squad, 2023 Hangzhou will mark their 16th Asian Games appearance.

A maximum of three senior players are permitted in each squad during the U-23 competition in men's football at the Asian Games in 2023. In Hangzhou, 23 teams will fight for medals.Six groups, five with four teams each and one with three, have been created for the group stage. The current competition champions and most successful team, the Republic of Korea, are in Group E. They have won five gold medals.

The top two teams from each group, as well as the four best third-place teams from each group, advance to the round of 16.17 senior teams, split into five groups, will compete in the women's football competition at the 2023 Asian Games. The team with the lowest ranking in Group B will be the Indian ladies, who are rated 60th. Thailand (44th) and Chinese Taipei (37th) are both ranked higher than India.

China and the Republic of Korea, both three-time gold medal winners, are in Group A, while the defending women's champion, Japan, is in Group D.In the women's competition, the top teams from each group and the three best second-place teams overall will advance.

In their two previous Asian Games appearances, the Indian women's football team placed eighth in Bangkok 1998 and ninth in Incheon 2014. In contrast to men's football, which has been a component of continental competition since the first Asian Games in 1951, women's football made its Asian Games debut in 1990.

Both the men's and women's Indian football teams did not participate in Jakarta 2018, the most recent Asian Games. This is due to a mandate from the Indian Ministry of Sports that only sports teams that had been ranked eighth or higher in Asia over the previous year were allowed to represent India at the continental competition. Both teams failed to fulfil the conditions. The same regulations were in place for Hangzhou 2023 as well, but the ministry eventually relaxed them to make it simpler for the city's two football teams to participate.
