India’s Men’s double pair and Commonwealth Game Champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the French Open Super 2022 badminton tournament men's doubles title as they slammed Chinese Taipei's Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in straight games 21-13, 21-19 in final, here on Sunday. This is the first time that an Indian Doubles pair has won a BWF Super 750 tournament.
This is also Satwik and Chirag's first-ever super 750 and second BWF World Tour title this year.
The Indian duo has been in great form as they defeated South Korea’s unseeded Choi-sul-Gyu and Kim-won-Ho in the semi-finals and became the second Indian men’s doubles pair to reach the finals at the French Open. Currently, placed at number 7 in the world rankings, Shetty and Ranikreddy began the season on a thunderous note by winning the Super 500 India Open title in their homeland. They have now reached the second final of the BWF world tour event after outwitting the Korean combination with 21-18, 21-14 in the semi-finals that lasted for 45 minutes.
The last Indian men’s doubles players to win the French Open title were Partho Ganguli and Vikram Singh in 1983. But in those days the tournament didn’t receive the amount of appreciation and support it gets today. The duo started the tournament by defeating Popov Brothers from France with a comeback of 19-21, 21-9, and 21-13 victory. Next up, they sailed through Malaysia’s Men Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun to reach the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, they were up against the top Japanese pair Takuro Hoki and Yugi Kobayashi and made their way straight into the semi-finals. On the other hand, Chinese Taipei’s Choi-sol-Gyu and Kim-won-Ho started the tournament with a clinching victory over Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo in three games and made their way to the second round. They are the Taeipi’s first duo to reach the final in this tournament.
