China Masters 2023; Satwiksairaj and Chirag make way to the Semi finals; Pranay left defeated in Quarterfinal

With advancing to men’s doubles semi-finals at the 2023 China Masters Super 750 event, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are set to play a semi-final clash against China’s He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu in the BWF Super 750 tournament on Saturday.

The Indian duo ranked fifth in Badminton with their strategic coordination and varied attacking moves won with scores, 21-16, 21-14 in just 46 minutes against the Indonesian pair Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, which are ranked at No.13. The Indian duo’s quarter final win marked the fourth consecutive victory against Indonesian pair.

Neither team gained a substantial lead in the initial moments of the match the teams were tied at 9-9, but the Indian duo took an 11-9 lead at the break. Rankireddy and Shetty managed to break away, securing a 21-16 victory in the first game. 

Maintaining momentum, they established a 5-2 lead in the second game, expanding it to 17-10. Despite the Indonesian pair's efforts, Chirag-Satwik secured a 4-0 head-to-head record. 

Prannoy unfortunate defeat

Regrettably, HS Prannoy's journey came to an end in the quarter-finals in Shenzhen on Friday.

In the men’s singles quarter-finals, he, ranked at No.8 globally faced a formidable challenge, losing to Japan’s Kodai Naraoka who is ranked Fifth, in straight games (9-21, 14-21).

Throughout the match, Prannoy encountered difficulties with making numerous unforced errors, with the score at 5-11 in the first game and ultimately losing in a 43-minute encounter. Despite a brief improvement in the second game, Prannoy couldn't overcome Naraoka's lead, making it a one-sided quarterfinal, resulting in his exit from the competition.

The results of Ongoing China Masters 2023, which commenced from 21 November and will end on NOV 26, is crucial as it will contribute to players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics, with the qualification window for badminton running from May 1, 2023, to April 2024.
