In the first round of the Australia Open badminton competition, Indian shuttler Mithun Manjunath upset fourth-seeded Kean Yew Loh of Singapore. Manjunath, who was 50th in the rankings, won the match with no ties. In the meantime, PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth also triumphed in their respective matches. While Srikanth prevailed against Kenta Nishimoto of Japan, Sindhu, who had difficulty in earlier tournaments this season, won her match against Ashmita Chaliha. Priyanshu Rajawat and HS Prannoy, two other Indian athletes, also won their matches.
But due to an injury, Lakshya Sen was forced to leave his match. In the women's singles, the matchup between Sindhu and Aakarshi Kashyap will guarantee that just one Indian player advances to the following round.
