Asian Champions Trophy: Harmanpreet and Varun lead India 7-2 triumph over China

In a spectacular display of prowess, the Indian hockey team, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, delivered a dominating performance against China during the opening match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2023. The contest unfolded at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, where the hosts enthralled the crowd with a resounding 7-2 victory. Harmanpreet Singh showcased his exceptional skills by netting two goals in quick succession, striking in the 5th and 8th minutes of the game. Varun Kumar mirrored his teammate's success, contributing two goals of his own in the 19th and 30th minutes. Notably, Harmanpreet converted two penalty corners, while Sukhjeet Singh, Akashdeep Singh, and Mandeep Singh also etched their names onto the scoresheet.

China managed to find some consolation amidst the Indian onslaught, with Wenhui E and Jiesheng Gao securing goals for their team. The Indian squad wasted no time, establishing their dominance early in the match. Merely five minutes into the contest, they earned a penalty corner, which Harmanpreet adeptly converted. This lead doubled shortly after, as Harmanpreet repeated his success from another penalty corner just three minutes later. The Indian team's defensive prowess stifled China's attempts to breach their territory, keeping much of the action confined to the Chinese half. As the first quarter drew to a close, India seized another penalty corner opportunity. Although Varun's initial flick was repelled by the Chinese defence, Sukhjeet capitalized on the rebound, widening India's lead to 3-0.

Entering the second quarter with confidence, India continued their offensive onslaught. In a seamless play, Akashdeep scored, assisted by Manpreet Singh, expanding India's lead to 4-0 a mere two minutes into the quarter. China managed to break through the Indian defence, with Wenhui capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Varun to score. However, India's response was swift, as Varun redeemed himself by finding the net once again from a set piece just a minute later. China eventually earned their first penalty corner in the 25th minute, with Gao capitalizing on the opportunity to narrow the scoreline. As halftime approached, Varun's expertise shone once more, as he converted yet another penalty corner, propelling India to a comfortable 6-2 lead at the break.

The second half saw little change in China's fortunes, despite their efforts to rally. India continued to exert pressure and capitalize on their chances. In the 40th minute, Mandeep Singh expertly directed Amit Rohidas's wide flick into the goal, securing India's seventh and final goal of the match. The third quarter unfolded with fewer fireworks, and the final quarter saw a quieter pace, with both teams earning several penalty corners but failing to convert them into goals. Looking ahead, India's next challenge will be against Japan on Friday. This stunning victory against China has set a high standard for the Indian team as they progress in the tournament.
