Amazon Prime seizes ICC cricket rights for Australia until 2027

Amazon Prime Video has just made a groundbreaking announcement! They have exclusively acquired the rights to broadcast Australia's World Test Championship and ODI World Cup defences. This means that cricket fans in Australia can catch all the action on their platform. Not only that, but Amazon Prime Video has also secured the rights to broadcast all men's and women's ICC tournaments.

The recent ODI World Cup was broadcast in its entirety by Foxtel/Kayo, whereas the Nine Network exclusively screened Australia's games. Following this, the Matildas joyfully celebrated on the field after their victory over France in a penalty shootout during the World Cup quarter-final. This development occurred shortly after the federal government reiterated its dedication to sports anti-siphoning measures.

Last week, the Communications Minister, Michelle Rowland, presented new legislation to parliament that would modernize anti-siphoning regulations. The proposed laws would mandate that free-to-air broadcasters be given priority access to significant sporting events.

“All Australians regardless of where they live, or what they earn, should have the opportunity to enjoy free TV coverage of iconic sporting events,” Rowland said.

Geoff Allardice, the head of ICC, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with Amazon, as reported by The Guardian. In a statement, Allardice stated, "We are thrilled to embark on a new four-year partnership with Prime Video for ICC cricket rights in Australia."

He further added, “The recently concluded men’s World Cup has highlighted the interest and passion for ICC events across the globe, and especially in Australia where cricket fans have enjoyed the recent success of their men’s and women’s teams. We look forward to working with Prime Video Australia to provide an innovative coverage of world-class cricket to more fans in Australia.”

Australia currently holds the championship titles for both the most recent Women's T20 World Cup and the 50-over edition of the Women's Cricket World Cup. Starting in January, the ICC and Amazon will commence their new partnership.
