Virat Kohli is entering another important chapter of his ODI career, with a historic 15,000-run milestone within touching distance and the 2027 World Cup now confirmed as his final global campaign for India.

There was a time when every Virat Kohli innings seemed to come with a new record attached to it. Now, as the former India captain enters the twilight phase of his international career, the milestones have taken on a different meaning.

Kohli needs just 59 runs to complete 15,000 ODI runs, a landmark that would place him alongside Sachin Tendulkar as only the second Indian and second batter overall to reach the figure. He enters India's three-match ODI series against West Indies with 14,941 runs from 314 matches and 302 innings, along with 54 centuries and 79 fifties.

But the numbers are only one part of the story.

The bigger development came on the eve of India's return to ODI cricket, when Kohli confirmed that the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will be his final World Cup for India. The tournament, scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, will therefore represent the last opportunity for the 37-year-old to chase the one major prize that has eluded him as an individual in the 50-over format.

59 runs away from another piece of history

Kohli's immediate target is remarkably straightforward.

Score 59 runs against West Indies and he will become the second batter in ODI history to reach 15,000 runs. The timing is particularly fitting because the West Indies have been one of the most productive opponents of his career.

Kohli has scored 2,261 runs in 43 ODIs against West Indies at an average of 66.50, including nine centuries and 11 fifties. He also has a remarkable history of producing milestone performances against the Caribbean side.

Eight years ago, West Indies were on the other side of another major moment in Kohli's career.

On October 24, 2018, Kohli scored an unbeaten 157 in Visakhapatnam and crossed the 10,000-run mark in ODI cricket. He reached that landmark in only 205 innings, surpassing Tendulkar's previous record of 259 innings for reaching the same figure.

Now, eight years later, West Indies once again stand between Kohli and a major ODI landmark.

There is also another intriguing possibility. Kohli has already scored nine ODI centuries against West Indies and 10 against Sri Lanka. Another hundred against the Caribbean side would make him the first batter in ODI history to score 10 centuries against two different opponents.

That makes the upcoming series about considerably more than simply adding another three matches to his career statistics.

A venue where Kohli has never been dismissed

The first ODI will be played in Thiruvananthapuram, a venue where Kohli has already enjoyed a memorable record.

He has played two ODIs at the Greenfield International Stadium and remains unbeaten in both. His most spectacular performance there came against Sri Lanka in January 2023, when he smashed an unbeaten 166 from 110 balls, an innings containing 13 fours and eight sixes. Across his two matches at the venue, Kohli has scored 199 runs without being dismissed.

His broader record against West Indies also adds to the anticipation.

In the 2018 series in India, Kohli scored 453 runs in five matches, including three centuries. His previous memorable performances against the side include a 140 off 107 balls in Guwahati and an unbeaten 114 in Port of Spain in 2019.

For a batter returning to the ODI spotlight, the conditions and opposition provide an intriguing backdrop.

More records could fall

The 15,000-run milestone is not the only record Kohli can chase during the West Indies series.

He currently has 6,867 ODI runs in India, while Tendulkar's tally stands at 6,976. That leaves Kohli 110 runs short of becoming the highest run-scorer in ODIs on home soil.

He is also closing in on another significant landmark involving centuries.

Kohli currently has 41 international centuries on Indian soil. Tendulkar's mark is 42. Reaching 43 would therefore give Kohli the outright record for most international hundreds at home, although that would require two centuries rather than one.

There is an even broader statistical milestone in the background. Kohli has 85 international centuries overall and continues to pursue the once-unthinkable 100-century mark. His current ODI tally stands at 54 hundreds.

Even before the West Indies series begins, therefore, the possibility exists for Kohli to add several more chapters to a career already filled with statistical landmarks.

The final World Cup changes the picture

Yet the most significant number surrounding Kohli right now may not be 15,000.

It is 2027.

Kohli has confirmed that the 2027 World Cup will be his last for India. It will be his fifth ODI World Cup appearance, having already featured in the 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 editions. He was part of India's title-winning campaign in 2011 and also experienced the disappointment of losing the 2023 final to Australia.

The 2027 tournament will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, meaning India will once again face the challenge of competing in conditions away from home.

Kohli has openly acknowledged the physical and mental demands of the 50-over World Cup. He described the intensity of maintaining a high level across roughly 10 matches as one of cricket's biggest challenges, particularly when the tournament is played overseas.

And that challenge appears to be precisely what is motivating him.

Kohli has made it clear that knowing the 2027 World Cup will be his last is driving him to leave everything on the field. His stated objective is simple: to win the World Cup and give everything necessary in pursuit of that goal.

A different phase of Kohli's international career

The context surrounding Kohli's ODI career has changed considerably.

He has already retired from T20 internationals and Test cricket, leaving ODIs as his only international format. Rohit Sharma is in the same position, with both veterans now concentrating exclusively on the 50-over game at international level.

That makes the road to 2027 particularly significant.

Kohli has already accumulated 1,795 runs in World Cup matches, averaging 59.83 across 37 games, with five centuries and 12 fifties. Those numbers underline how central he has been to India's World Cup campaigns over the years.

But the final World Cup will not simply be about extending those statistics.

For Kohli, it represents the closing stretch of an ODI journey that began in 2008 and has included more than 14,000 runs, dozens of centuries, a World Cup title, another final appearance and a succession of batting records.

The immediate road begins against West Indies.

First comes 59 runs and the possibility of joining the 15,000-run club. Beyond that lies a series of other statistical landmarks. And beyond all the numbers lies the larger target: preparing for one final World Cup campaign with India.

Kohli's career has repeatedly been defined by the pursuit of the next challenge. As 2027 approaches, that challenge has finally been given a clear deadline.

One milestone is 59 runs away. The ultimate one is a World Cup trophy.
