Hair salons across Belgium are collecting customers' hair only to hand them over to an NGO that recycles it to protect the environment.
The Hair Recycle project feeds hair into a recycling machine that in turn converts them into matted squares. These squares can be used to absorb oil and other hydrocarbons polluting the environment, or made into bio-composite bags.
Hair recycling is the process of collecting and repurposing human hair for a variety of different uses. There are a number of organisations and initiatives that work to collect and recycle hair for various purposes, including:
- Wig-making: Human hair is often collected and used to create wigs for people who have lost their hair due to medical conditions or treatments.
- Hair booms: Hair collected from salons and other sources is sometimes used to create "hair booms," which are used to absorb oil and other pollutants from water.
- Art and craft projects: Hair can be used in a variety of art and craft projects, such as creating jewellery or other decorative items.
- Soil erosion control: Hair collected from salons and other sources can be used as a natural mulch to help control soil erosion in gardens and other outdoor areas.
Due to its keratin fibres, a single strand can support up to 10 million times its own weight and is water-soluble, highly elastic, and capable of absorbing fat and hydrocarbons.
