NASA unveiled the crew for its first human mission to the moon in 50 years, including the first woman and Black man to voyage into space. Christina Koch, a NASA astronaut who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight, will be a mission specialist on next year's Artemis II flight around the moon. Victor Glover, a naval aviator for NASA, will take command of the Orion spacecraft in November 2024, making him the first Black man to participate in a lunar mission.

The mission commander, veteran NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, who is 47 years old, and Jeremy Hansen, who is also 47 years old and works for the Canadian Space Agency, complete the crew. Since the historic Apollo missions ended in 1972, the three Americans and one Canadian astronaut will be the first to go that far into space. The first Artemis flight successfully returned an uncrewed Orion capsule to Earth after a 25-day journey around the moon in December.
During its journey around the satellite orbiting Earth and back, Orion travelled more than 1.6 million kilometres and travelled further from Earth than any previous habitable spacecraft. Only 12 people have set foot on the Moon, all of them are white men.
