Does the 6th Ocean Exist? Well, Scientists have a new Answer for you

Thinking that there are only 5 oceans on the Earth? You might be wrong there.

From our childhood, we have learned about the oceans of the earth which include the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Southern Oceans but it is time to update our books and learn more about the ocean which we can not see but lies below the earth’s surface.

A recent study suggests that a vast reservoir of water is present in the Transition Zone, between the upper and lower mantle at a depth of 410 to 660 km. It is said that natural diamonds are formed in the mantle of the earth between the range of 150kms to 250kms, but some may come out from deeper than that. Recently, while studying the rare Botswana Diamond the chemical condition of the diamonds gave an idea that it was formed at a depth of 660 km in very watery conditions. So, is it indicates that Jules Verne's idea of an ocean inside the earth is right?

Yes, you heard it right. Earth’s 70% of the surface is covered with water but no one imagined that there are chances of the presence of water inside the earth as well, which is assumed to be 6 times more than the water of oceans.

While analysis of Botswana, Diamond the technique of Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectrometry was used which revealed ringwoodite inclusion which indicates high water content. "In our analysis, we have proved that the transition zone includes a large amount of water rather than behaving as a dry sponge," says Professor Frank Brenker of the Institute for Geosciences.

He further added "These mineral transformations greatly hinder the movements of rock in the mantle. Subducting plates often have difficulty breaking through the entire transition zone. So there is a whole graveyard of such plates in this zone underneath Europe," he added.

The study shows that the planet’s water cycle not only contains the water on and above the surface but also involves the Earth’s interior.
