Telangana Election 2023: High Voter Turnout, Mixed Prediction Emerges after Exit Polls

In this Election Season, with 5 States helding Assembly Elections including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram from November 7 to November 25, Telangana being the last state held elections on 30 November. 

Telangana, with 32.6 million voters, went to election to determine the fate of 2,290 candidates contesting for 119 assembly seats. Counting of the votes and declaration of the results is scheduled for December 3, along with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram.

Polling for the assembly elections commenced at 7 am and concluded at 5 pm in 106 constituencies. It extended until 4 pm in 13 Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas.

In Early Morning, long queues formed outside polling stations in both urban and rural areas of Telangana. By 5 pm Telangana saw a significant voter turnout, reaching approximately 63.94%, with active participation in the polling for 119 Assembly constituencies. Over 250,000 staff were actively involved in poll duties. 

2,290 candidates from 109 parties, including 221 women and one transgender candidate, are competing in the elections. The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has put forth candidates for all 119 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena are contesting in 111 and 8 seats, respectively. Additionally, the Congress allocated one seat to its ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), participating in the electoral race in 118 other constituencies.

In the competition are Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, his son K T Rama Rao, State Congress President A Revanth Reddy, and BJP Lok Sabha members Bandi Sanjay Kumar and D Arvind, among others.

The Telangana Chief Minister, leading the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), cast his vote in Medak district during the ongoing polling for the 119-member assembly. Accompanying him, his wife, Shobha Rao, exercised their voting rights at a polling station in Chintamadaka, Siddipet. 

CM Rao's daughter, Kavitha, cast her vote in Banjara Hills, emphasizing the importance of active participation in the democratic process. She urged everyone in Telangana to exercise their right to vote, stating, "Because when you vote, you have the right to question us. When you vote, you can hold the politicians accountable." However, the Congress party raised concerns with Chief Electoral Officer Vikas Raj, accusing Kavitha of violating the poll code by urging people to vote for the BRS.

AIMIM leader Owaisi cast his vote at a school in Rajendra Nagar Assembly constituency. Owaisi encouraged voters to participate in the electoral process. Expressing hope for a positive outcome, he emphasized the importance of people coming out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote. Owaisi stated, "Now it is for the people to come out to vote in thousands and lakhs and exercise the right to vote so that you reward those candidates and parties who have been working for you, who have great concern for you."

State Congress president and MP A Revanth Reddy cast his vote in the Kodangal assembly segment where he is contesting. However, BRS workers intervened as Kondal Reddy, brother of state Congress president Revanth Reddy, tried to visit a polling booth in Kamareddy, citing he's not a registered voter. A BRS worker accused Kondal Reddy of using a counterfeit pass, engaging in hooliganism, and claimed police inaction. Kondal Reddy countered, alleging an attack by BRS workers, stating he lodged a complaint with the SP. Both parties express dissatisfaction, with BRS planning to file a complaint with the Election Commission.

Exit polls from various sources are projecting varying outcomes. India TV-CNX predicts 63-79 seats for the Congress, 31-47 for the BRS, 2-4 for the BJP, and 5-7 for the AIMIM. Jan Ki Baat forecasts 48-64 seats for the Congress, 40-55 for the BRS, 7-13 for the BJP, and 4-7 for AIMIM. Republic TV-Matrize anticipates 58-68 seats for the Congress, 46-56 for the BRS, 4-9 for the BJP, and 5-9 for AIMIM. TV9 Bharatvarsh Polstrat suggests 49-59 seats for the Congress and 48-58 for the BRS in Telangana.
