In its notice, the ECI said that Gandhi's remarks were "unbecoming" and could "affect the level of discourse in the elections." The Commission has asked Gandhi to explain his remarks within 24 hours.

Gandhi made the remarks on November 22 while addressing a rally in Rajasthan's Dausa district. He said, "Modi ji is a panauti wherever he goes, there is bad luck." He also said, "Modi ji is a jebkatra, he takes money from the poor and gives it to the rich."

The BJP had complained to the ECI about Gandhi's remarks, saying they were "derogatory" and "insulting" to the Prime Minister. They have condemned Gandhi's remarks and demanded an apology from him. Party spokesperson Sambit Patra said, "Gandhi's remarks are a reflection of his frustration. He is unable to match Modi's popularity and is resorting to such cheap tactics."

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to issue a show-cause notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "panauti" (jinx) and "jebkatra" (pickpocket) during a poll campaign in Rajasthan.

The ECI is likely to take action against Gandhi under the Model Code of Conduct, which prohibits personal attacks and derogatory remarks.
