At a Civil Investiture Ceremony today evening at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu presented the Padma Awards for the upcoming year.
Six of the 106 Padma awards that were presented were Padma Vibhushan awards, nine were Padma Bhushan awards, and 91 were Padma Shri awards.
Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards in India. They are awarded to individuals from various fields like arts, literature, education, sports, medicine, social work, science and engineering, etc., for their distinguished contribution in their respective fields.
There are three categories of Padma Awards:
Padma Vibhushan - This is the highest category of the Padma Awards, and it is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service in any field including service rendered by Government servants. The award consists of a medal and a citation.
Padma Bhushan - This is the second-highest category of the Padma Awards, and it is awarded for distinguished service of a high order in any field including service rendered by Government servants. The award consists of a medal and a citation.
Padma Shri - This is the third-highest category of the Padma Awards, and it is awarded for distinguished service in any field including service rendered by Government servants. The award consists of a medal and a citation.
The Padma Awards are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day, and the awards are presented by the President of India.
