Former chief election commissioner Manohar Singh Gill passed away at the age of 86 after a brief illness. Gill, a former bureaucrat, served as the chief election commissioner from December 1996 to June 2001. He was known for his contributions to the electoral process in India. Gill and GVG Krishnamurty were made members of the Election Commission when TN Seshan was heading the poll panel, which transformed it into a multi-member body.
Gill was the first former CEC to join politics and became a member of the Rajya Sabha as a Congress member. He was also appointed as the Union sports minister in 2008. The three daughters and wife of Gill are still alive. The Election Commission expressed deep sorrow over his demise and praised his leadership and commitment to the electoral process.
Gill was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2000 for his exceptional services as a civil servant. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh also expressed their condolences and highlighted Gill's contributions to the nation's development in various fields such as sports, electoral processes, and agriculture.
