On March 4, Bharatiya Janata Party National President Jagat Prakash Nadda resigned from his post as a Rajya Sabha MP, which was approved by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. In the Parliament's Upper House, Nadda represented the state of Himachal Pradesh. As a result of his departure, the position is now empty as of March 4.
The news release issued by the Rajya Sabha stated, "Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, an elected Member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), representing the State of Himachal Pradesh, resigned his seat in Rajya Sabha and his resignation has been accepted by the Chairman, Rajya Sabha w.e.f. 4th March, 2024."
JP Nadda to contest from Gujarat
JP Nadda was elected unopposed to the upper house from Gujarat in February, and he was one of 57 Rajya Sabha members whose terms ended in April. He will continue to serve as a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat.
In the recently finished Rajya Sabha elections, which take place ahead of the key 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Jagat Prakash Nadda was one of the 41 candidates who gained seats without any opposition.
Nadda was nominated as the party's candidate in Gujarat, which sent four BJP members to the Upper House. His tenure as BJP president has been extended till June in the meantime. Before taking office as the BJP's national president on January 20, 2020, Nadda held the position of Union Health Minister from 2014 to 2019.
BJP’s seats in the recent Rajya Sabha elections
BJP secured the sole Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh in the just-ended Rajya Sabha elections, even though Congress currently governs the state.
Harsh Mahajan of the BJP was elected as Rajya Sabha MP, defeating Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi in a draw of lots after both candidates received 34 votes each. Even though the BJP only has 25 MLAs in the mountainous state, cross-voting has helped them.
