The announcement of the alliance was made following the second round of talks between Naidu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J P Nadda, and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan. Discussions between the three parties had been ongoing for several days.

In 2014, the TDP and BJP jointly contested the Lok Sabha polls and assembly elections. But in 2018, Naidu called for the alliance's dissolution, pointing to the Center's refusal to grant Andhra Pradesh special category status. It was seen as a political move ahead of the 2019 elections, but it did not go well for the TDP. Ever since, Naidu has been working to rebuild his relationship with the NDA.
