The air quality in the national capital experienced a decline on Monday morning, falling into the category labelled as 'Very Poor', with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 306. This is an increase from the previous reading of 302 recorded on Sunday afternoon, according to SAFAR-India data. The situation had worsened from 'poor' to 'very poor' on Sunday, with an AQI of 302, indicating a notable decrease from the AQI of 266 on Sunday morning. Live air quality status
Sanjay Chaudhary, a concerned cyclist at India Gate, has expressed his worry about the increasing pollution levels in the past 10-12 days. This has resulted in discomfort and visibility problems, leading cyclists like him to take precautions and wear protective gear. According to the most recent SAFAR data, the air quality around Delhi University was measured at 330 (very poor) at noon. In addition, IGI Terminal T3 in New Delhi recorded an AQI of 313, indicating a significant rise from 276 on Sunday morning.
India Gate also experienced an AQI of 266 on Sunday morning, suggesting a decrease in air quality. Nearby, Noida had a recorded AQI of 290 (poor), while Gurugram's air quality was relatively better at 152 (moderate). However, Anand Vihar in New Delhi exceeded the 'very poor' category with an AQI of 345, followed by ITO at 309, New Moti Bagh at 360, and Dwarkar Sector-8 at 313.
In light of the escalating concerns about air quality, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has acknowledged that the colder climate and decreased wind speed could potentially contribute to heightened pollution levels. He strongly urges the implementation of the second phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and invites relevant departments to convene a meeting to discuss its effective execution. Additionally, Rai underscores the significance of managing pollution sources and suggests strategies such as cleaning and water sprinkling.
Rai also shared his intentions to enhance the frequency of buses and trains. He kindly mentioned that fruitful conversations had been held with the environment ministers of neighbouring states to tackle the issue of stubble burning. He emphasized the significance of the upcoming 10 to 15 days for Delhi, considering factors such as Diwali, stubble burning, and Dussehra.
The Air Quality Index plays an important role in effectively communicating the status of air quality to the public in a way that is easy to understand. It classifies air quality into six levels, ranging from 'Good + Satisfactory' to 'Severe', based on the concentration of air pollutants and their impact on health.
The current 'very poor' category in Delhi highlights the pressing need for immediate action and improvement in air quality.
