According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the brewing Cyclone 'Tej' in the Arabian Sea is expected to become a 'severe cyclonic storm' by Sunday evening. Initially classified as a cyclonic storm, 'Tej' developed from a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea. It is currently located approximately 820 km E-SE of Socotra (Yemen) and 1100 km S-SE of Salalah Airport (Oman). The IMD predicts that it will strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm within the next six hours and further intensify by the evening of October 22.
The anticipated progress of 'Severe cyclonic storm' Tej is towards the southern coasts of Oman and adjoining Yemen. The name 'Tej' follows India's established naming convention for cyclones. Caution is advised by the IMD, as the Southwest Arabian Sea is expected to experience very rough to high sea conditions, which are anticipated to escalate to a phenomenal state from October 21 to 23. In the western Arabian Sea, there is a likelihood of very rough sea conditions from October 22 to 25. Additionally, moderate to rough sea conditions are predicted in the Southwest, west-central, and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal on October 21, with an expectation of becoming rough to very rough on October 23. Similarly, rough to very rough sea conditions are expected along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh from October 24 to 26.
The IMD kindly advises fishermen to avoid going into the sea and coastal areas until October 26. It is highly recommended for those currently at sea to safely return to the coast.
Regarding the potential impact, it is projected that the cyclonic storm will not have any effect on Gujarat. The IMD has clarified that due to its west-northwest path, Gujarat, which is situated to the east, is unlikely to experience any unfavourable weather conditions. As a result, Gujarat is expected to remain dry for the next seven days, as confirmed by an IMD official.

The IMD forecasts that regions within the storm's potential path may experience light to moderate rainfall, as well as thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Kerala is expected to encounter these conditions on October 23 and 24, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura can anticipate them on October 24.
