K-pop, a consistent hot trending topic on the internet has again created a buzz among stans. This time the MAMA, the biggest event in Kpop, has revealed this year's nominations. Nominations of The 2023 Mnet MAMA Awards were revealed on October 19, featuring Big K-POP groups like BTS, EXO, Stray Kids in different categories.
This music award event, managed by CJ E&M, was initially established in 1999 and is one of the most popular Award events in the Kpop realm. MAMA Awards recognize exceptional accomplishments within the K-pop and Asian music scene.
Tokyo Dome, Japan has been kept as the venue for the Award ceremony. The event is scheduled to take place on November 28 and 29. MAMA 2022 was held in Osaka, Japan. This event will be broadcast live on multiple global platforms, including CJ ENM's music channel Mnet.
Nominations and Voting Details
The 2023 MAMA Awards will feature 20 categories for awards. In 16 of these categories, there are five or six nominees. However, in the four major categories, which include artist of the year, song of the year, album of the year, and worldwide fans' choice, there are numerous entries.
Interestingly, All artists nominated in categories except the major four are automatically nominated in the major categories, which is an unusual approach for an award show to adopt.
Moreover, Various prominent Western artists are also nominated across different categories. Latto is nominated as a featured artist on Jung Kook's "Seven," which achieved the impressive feat of reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July. J. Cole and Nile Rodgers are also featured artists on J-Hope's "on the street" and LE SSERAFIM's "UNFORGIVEN," respectively. British singer Anne-Marie is co-lead artist alongside MINNIE of (G)I-DLE on "Expectations."
The criteria for winning awards is based on music released from October 22, 2022, to September 30, 2023.
For the worldwide fans' choice category, the winners are decided through global fan voting. Pre-voting for the Worldwide Fans' Choice nominees will start on October 19 and will continue until October 30, at 11:59 PM KST. The second round of voting will occur from November 6 to November 20. The final round of voting for the 2023 MAMA Awards will involve 20 artists selected from the nominees. This voting phase is scheduled to run from November 6 at 6 PM KST to November 20 at 11:59 PM KST. The vote count and the overall voting process will be verified by Samil PwC.
Fans have the opportunity to cast their votes on the K-culture platform Mnet Plus and on Spotify, which is one of the sponsors for this year's awards.
BTS' Nominations - BTS vs BTS
The Bangtan Boys currently on a hiatus due to military obligation have once again stunned the internet as they managed to get nominated across various categories in Mnet MAMA Awards 2023.
BTS have earned a total of eight nominations, the most a K-pop group has earned in the MAMA Awards despite being inactive. They are nominated in categories including Best Male Artist, Best Vocal Performance Group, Best Vocal Performance Solo, Best OST, Best Rap & Hip Hop Performance, and Best Collaboration for the boys.
In the Best Male Artist category, three members of BTS - Jimin, Jung Kook, and V are in competition with Lim Young Woong, Parc Jae Jung, and TAEYANG.
Jungkook gets nominated in four categories this year. Jungkook's "SEVEN" featuring Latto has earned nominations in multiple categories, including Rookie of the Year, Song of the Year, Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Music Video.
In the Pop Vocal Album category, Jimin's "FACE," RM's "Indigo," and V's "LAYOVER" have been nominated.
Jimin's "Like Crazy" has impressively received nominations in both the Rookie of the Year and Song of the Year categories. Jimin's "Angel Pt.1" has been nominated for Pop Duo/Group Performance. Jimin along with TOMORROW X TOGETHER has eight nominations each, the highest earned by any artist this year.
Additionally, "On The Street" by J-hope and "Wild Flower" by RM along with Jungkook are both contenders in the Pop Duo/Group Performance category.
In the Best Music Video category, the nominations include Jin's "The Astronaut," J-hope's "On The Street," RM's "Wild Flower," and SUGA's "Haegeum." Moreover, V's "Slow Dancing" and Jin's "The Astronaut" have each earned nominations in the Pop Solo Performance category. It's a diverse selection of talent in these categories.
SUGA has been nominated in two categories this year, Best Rap Album with his solo release, "D-DAY," and Best Rap Performance for "Haegeum."
On X, Army, BTS' fandom has taken the social media by storm and are trending BTS vs BTS, while expressing their dilemma to vote for which member on which categories. Simultaneously fans are expressing excitement after BTS's nominations in various categories. Fans are looking forward to this Grand Kpop event.
