NEET-UG 2024: In the recently announced NEET-UG Results, a record 67 students have shared the All India Rank (AIR) 1, with each achieving a percentile score of 99.997129. Students are worried about the effect this result will have on the cut-off and the admission process. Experts have raised their concerns about the malpractice in the merit lists. In their initial clarification, the National Testing Agency (NTA) said this anomaly in the results could be a consequence of the change in the NCERT books. This year 23.81 aspirants registered for NEET-UG, a surge from last year’s 20.87 lakh registrations.
The rumours around paper leaks had started to stem in May, but the NTA issued a statement clarifying that strict security protocols and standard operating procedures ensured the safekeeping of question papers. However, after NTA’s dismissal on paper leaks, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of the Bihar Police arrested 13 people on similar charges. The testing agency also held a re-examination at a Rajasthan exam centre where students received different question papers. Another incident happened in Gujarat’s Godhra district where a teacher was accused of allegedly helping six NEET aspirants in exchange for ₹10 lakh from each candidate.
The NTA also received few representations and Court Cases from several NEET candidates raising concerns of time being lost while conducting the examination. Several hours after the NEET Results were declared, the NTA issued a statement saying that some students were allotted grace marks due to loss of time during examination.
“Such cases/representations were considered by NTA and the normalisation formula, which has been devised and adopted by the Hon'ble Supreme Court, vide its Judgment dated 13.06.2018, was implemented to address the loss of time faced by the candidates of NEET (UG) 2024," – the official NTA Notice
In Conclusion:
Due to all these turbulences in the examination process, a group of parents have started an online campaign demanding a re-examination for NEET-UG 2024. They have serious doubts about matters like paper leaks, grace marking and private coaching institutes’ involvement.
