Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's membership in Parliament has been reinstated after the Supreme Court suspended his conviction in a defamation case from 2019 related to his remarks about the 'Modi surname'. The Lok Sabha secretariat issued a notification confirming that his disqualification as a Lok Sabha member has been revoked.
Rahul Gandhi arrived at Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon session, and he was warmly welcomed by many Opposition MPs as he entered the premises. Before starting his activities, he paid his respects to Mahatma Gandhi's statue by offering prayers.On March 23, Rahul Gandhi had to step down from his position as a Lok Sabha MP because a court in Gujarat found him guilty in a defamation case regarding his remarks about the 'Modi surname'. He was then sentenced to 2 years in jail.When a lawmaker receives a punishment of two years or more, they are automatically disqualified from their position.Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge welcomed the decision to restore Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary membership, seeing it as a positive step. He also shared a video on Twitter where he offered sweets to the Opposition leaders to celebrate Rahul Gandhi's return as an MP after the Lok Sabha Secretariat removed his disqualification.
On August 4, the Supreme Court put on hold Rahul Gandhi's conviction in a criminal defamation case from 2019 related to his comments about the 'Modi surname'. The court further noted that the trial judge in Surat did not provide enough reasons for giving the maximum two-year sentence.Rahul Gandhi was serving as an MP from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala since 2019 until he was disqualified in March of this year following his conviction.After the Gujarat High Court rejected his petition last month to suspend his conviction while the session court heard his appeal to overturn the conviction entirely, the Congress leader appealed to the Supreme Court.
